Re-caning is the replacement of damaged cane in furniture. We do full restorations and repairs, including stripping and refinishing, hand cane seats, pressed cane seats, porch rockers, splint seats, rush seats and reglueing.
We can re-cane all styles of caned furniture, including:
- Rushing
- Hand woven and finished.
- Rattan
- Sheets of rattan replaced and hand edged.
- Splint - a wide 1" piece of cane (found in porch rockers etc.
The hand-caning style, French lace, includes chairs with holes in the seats and backs through which the cane is woven back and forth through the holes several times. It is the distance between holes that determines the size of the cane.
Pressed cane is manufactured and comes in rolls of different widths. For this type, we fit the cane into grooves in the chair seats and backs.
The third type of seating, rush, is created by hand weaving fiber rush, which has a brownish hue.
We only refinish the old fashioned way, by hand, no shortcuts. Whether it's a small scratch or an entire piece we take pride in our hands on approach. Our old fashioned methods assure you that your valuable antiques will be preserved properly.
We re-cane chairs including split and rush and can re-tape those Shaker seats.
Here at William Austin Antiques we will also do splint caning on Brumby-style rockers, which have a herringbone pattern that we weaves.
