Shortly after the turn of the nineteenth century, whale oil lamps in many forms were used - the growth of the whaling industry had made this fuel both economical and plentiful.

After the discovery of kerosene in 1854, it was widely used in the popular Argand and Astral type mantel and table lamps. Gas lighting was demonstrated in Philadelphia as early as 1796, but was not for the common man until much later.

Despite Mr. Edison's invention of a commercially practical incandescent lamp in 1879, kerosene lamps remained the basic lighting fixtures for most country homes well into the twentieth century. (from Country Antiques and Collectibles edited by Carter Smith)

In the 1920s, the Art Deco style was in fashion, and this impacted on lamp shade design also. Famous lighting manufacturers such as Handel and Crucet manufactured ranges of glass and cloth shades. At this time also Tiffany started making their elaborate stained glass lampshades, which are still popular today.

From the 1940s though, the more elaborate lampshades fell out of favor. Elaborate meant expensive, and so many more lampshades were mass produced out of plastic and paper.
