Let there be Light!...'The different shades of lamp shades'...
Even as late as the nineteenth century, many American families depend on the fireplace as their basic source of light. Turpentine rich pine-splints, which were burned on stones or pans near the chimney, were used in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the burning of oil - fish oil - was reported as early as 1630. Pewter and iron candlesticks were the most popular lighting devices when candles became more readily available
Lamp shades have been a part of history since the 1800s. In the Victorian period, lampshades were, hugely ornate and decorative. Very elaborate material lampshades were made, as well as glass. If a lampshade had a fringe, beading, pleating or lace then it was much prized. Unfortunately, due to the fragile nature of cloth, not many examples of the lampshades of this period exist now. >>Read Lamp Shade Trivia & History
