The origin of the "Hoosier" cabinet can be traced back to the baker's cabinets of the late 1800's.
In recent years the term "Hoosier" cabinet has been used rather loosely to refer to freestanding kitchen cabinets made from the turn of the century to the mid 1930's.
These cabinets usually have porcelain work tops, roll doors, and built-in flour sifters. Many of these cabinets were also equipped with tin bread drawers, sugar jars, spice jars, pullout bread boards, and countless other features designed to provide the housewife with a "modern, efficient kitchen."
Although nearly four million Hoosier cabinets were produced from 1900 to 1940, the majority were built between 1915 and 1930. Most of the Hoosiers found today are from this period.
Most Hoosier cabinets built before 1920 were finished in natural oak. In 1913 the cabinets were available with the interior of the upper cupboard finished in white enamel at a slight extra cost. These models were named "White Beauty".
The style of the Hoosier cabinet was changed often in the 1930. The classic Hoosier features disappeared as the cabinets became plain, simple and modern. The unique Hoosier flour sifter was replaced by simpler sifters including one that was mounted on a upper door.
The Hoosier is amazingly convenient . From the splendid metal flour bin with its handy sifter, and the metal bin for sugar at your finger tips. The roomy upper cupboard for dishes and supplies; the cupboard below for pans and pots, the metal lined drawer correctly designed for fresh cake and bread, and still other drawers for cutlery and towels.
